Questar III/BETAC Title III Consortium

Technology as a Tool for Supporting Reading Instruction for English Language Learners for the 2005-2006 school year

Sixteen Questar III BETAC districts joined our NCLB Title III Consortium with the focus on using technology to support reading instruction for LEPs. ESL teachers and mainstream colleagues enjoyed professional development workshops both regionally and in-district, before conducting their own Title III programs in their districts. Teachers are either conducting an after school or Saturday program for LEPs, or incorporating what they learned to enrich their regular ESL classes. Teachers developed extensive learning experiences that used software purchased with Title III funds to teach reading skills. In a wrap-up meeting in June, they will present the results, share student work, and elicit feedback from colleagues.

This is the fourth year Questar III BETAC has successfully applied for a Title III consortium grant. “Many of our service area districts have Title III allocations of less than $10k, which prevents them from accessing the funds on their own,” explains BETAC’s Director, Juan Vargas. “Allocations are based on the number of LEP students. For districts with low numbers, joining a consortium gives ESL teachers opportunities they would not have otherwise.”
