Brunswick-BrittonkillEven though I will offer the after-school program to all the LEP students at Brittonkill, I plan to write the learning experience involving only one student, a sixth-grade student with learning disabilities. Her needs, strategies, and modifications are vastly different than the rest of my students. I plan on using the software "Why Mosquitioes Buzz in People's Ears". Without access to the software program right now, I can't be more specific. Catskill SDI will be using "Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears"....we will make a cooperative story map of this tale...focus on beginning/middle/ end. I will give each student the text of this story after reading/watching on the CD. We will discuss the story...what made it interesting??? characters...etc Each student will then find ( in our library or on the web)a folktale from their own or other country. They will read and retell this story, individually or in pairs depending on interest. They can retell it:
I think it is important to give the students choices. We will brainstorm what each person will do with their new tale. Finally, if time allows they can share their work with their homeroom class. Depending on time and interest our ESL class can write and illustrate our own tale, folk limerick or tongue twister. Chatham CSDCoxsackie- Athens CSDI will be using Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. I got the book from school, and have been enjoying and reviewing the story. This project will be with 2 kindergarten students, as an enrichment program. One student is advanced ESL, and one is a beginner. They are in the same classroom with their kindergarten teacher, and I do work with them together, most of the time. The beginner gets separate instruction, too. Using the sample classroom tasks on page 19 of the ESL standards book, I will be using and modifying some of the ideas for pre-reading activities. We will be focusing on the nine animals from the story. We will learn how to read their names, and match their names to their pictures. Next, we will discuss the 5 animal species (they will be doing this in their classroom, also). The animals in the book, represent 4 out of the 5 species. We will learn about the characteristics of each group. My 2 students will be able to state properties from each animal group. Next, I would like them to be able to create riddle books. In their writing, they can also state what animal group pertains to their animal. For example, "I am a mammal. I have soft fur, a short tail, and long ears. I live in a hole. My baby is called a bunny. What animal am I from the story?” Then we will work with the software and go through the activities at each student’s level. I have discussed my plans with the classroom teacher, and I will keep her posted as to my progress. We will have a culminating event, by sharing our work with the whole kindergarten class. East Greenbush CSDGloversville CSDGreenville CSDKinderhook CSDLansingburgh CSDMoriah CSDRavena Coeymans Selkirk CSDWe will conduct an after school program with a pre-assessment questionnaire which will attempt to discover how much access and where they have access, what kind of equipment they have access to and what computer use styles they have. This will help us to individualize instruction a bit. We will use the middle level software and study genres, Classics which they can later delve into in more depth, and strategies. We are excited and will share as we go along! Rotterdam-MohonasenSaranac Lake CSD
Scotia-Glenville CSDProject Proposal: Folktales Around the World This is an after-school program for middle and high school students, from beginner to advanced levels. We will use the Learning Through Literature and Reading for Meaning. After using the software/activities, students will research and find a folktale from their home country to introduce to the class. We will read and discuss them together, comparing and contrasting various story and stylistic elements of folktales (perhaps with Venn diagrams). Then as a class we will write our own folktale in the form of a play which we hope to perform for others (this was my students’ suggestion!). Taconic Hills CSDMy plans are to do enrichment series with two kindergartners from Spanish-speaking households. I plan to use materials and exercises from Chato's Kitchen. I am familiarizing myself with this material now. If I find useful activities in Mosquitos later on, I might try to add that. I plan to lean on my mentor, Linda Weber, for hints and guidance as I get into this project, since, like her, I have a long background in adult ed. and still feel new in elementary ed.
